diversity!

ARTICLE LINK

This article discusses the diversity that is being exposed in new nighttime talk show programs. Specifically, it covers three new shows, hosted by Wanda Sykes, Mo'Nique, and George Lopez. In the past, all talk show hosts have been white males: Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and so on. Very recently, they have been women, or homosexual, or of a race other than white. Along with these three new hosts, it brings up Chelsea Handler and her Show, "Chelsea Lately," which is very witty and provocative, yet brings in great reviews.
The subject of this article is very relevant to many people in the United States. So many Americans watch television, so when diversity is introduced in areas where it hasn't been previously, it opens the eyes of the people watching. Since I watch "Chelsea Lately" almost nightly, I can agree that she does bring up some very risky topics, but makes a joke of them.
I totally agree with the article. It's great that finally, talk show hosts are becoming more diverse, whether they realize it or not. More than ever, I've seen shows with hosts that are gay or lesbian, a woman, or of another race not Caucasian. This is a small step for Americans and television, but a step nonetheless. Although it SUCKS that everyone is so glued to the television, at least there is some diversity being shown to these people.

fort hood shooting

1. What are your thoughts, feelings, etc, as you read these articles?
I almost wish he wasn't in such critical condition so he could at least give his reasoning; since he can't speak for himself, everyone else is going to start forming opinions, probably about his race and religion... this will only make racism and prejudice worse.

2. What role do you think terrorism played in this massacre, if any? Why? Do you think that there was an terrorist organization behind the shooting?
Honestly, I don't know a lot about this story, but maybe that's to my advantage. I don't think it was an act of terrorism. Just because he believes in the same religion as some others who have performed acts of terrorism, doesn't make him a terrorist. I think he had some mental issues, probably relating to his extensive experience with PTSD patients.

3. What role did racism or religious persecution play in this incident? Why?
A HUGE one. SO many people who see this on television, or who are probably reading about this in one of their classes are assuming that he did this due to his race or religion, but no one will really ever know except him, ESPECIALLY if he stays paralyzed.

4. Do you think a lot of Muslim Americans have the same feelings as this man? Why or why not?
Its very possible. I know that if I were a Muslim American, and people criticized me for something I didn't do, I would be extremely angry, but I would try not to generalize every non-Muslim as someone who hated my religion, because it is only specific people.

5. What do you think the military could have done to prevent this from happening? Why do you believe this? Were there signs that this man had the potential to do something like this? What were they?
If there were signs such as him being Muslim, him not wanting to be deployed, his blogs, etc, then they should have intervened and given him some psychiatric help, maybe given him a break from his position. I don't really see any signs, I'm strongly against certain things but I would never consider killing people.

6. Talk about the leadership of Kimberly Munley (the woman who stopped the shooter). What did she do? How would you have reacted in the same situation?
Munley went right into the situation, even though she had the choice to just wait for backup and then enter the situation. She definitely saved many people from getting shot by stopping the shooter before he could move on. I probably would have waited for backup, since I'm lame :/

7. What does this incident say about race relations in America? Specifically with Arab-Americans and Muslims? Is there a reason that Muslims and people from the Arab world feel a certain way about America?
There is definitely a reason why certain other countries have strong feelings against America. We started a war in a country that had nothing to do with what was going on; I'd hate us too.

headbutt article summary

1. This video/article was very surprising. Of course football is already very aggressive, but this takes it to the next level. No player, high school or NFL, should go to such lengths to hit somebody who doesn't have the correct protection on. He should be charged criminally because he seriously injured someone who was pretty much innocent. There's always the possibility that he didn't realize his helmet was off, but it's extremely unlikely.

2. There should be an expectation of some violence, but that's why there are penalties, like unnecessary roughness. Contact sports like football, rugby, soccer, etc, have penalties and rules that keep athletes from getting too overboard with the actual "contact". However, in this situation, the victim of the assault wasn't fully geared at the time (helmet was off), so he wouldn't be able to take a hit like usual.

How would this make you feel?
What would you want done about this situation?
What would you do about this situation?

VICTIM
-Extremely mad, I'll be scarred (literally) for life. Any other football player in their right mind wouldn't do this to an opponent!
-It's a good thing he is being charged criminally and paying a fine, but I don't think anything will be enough for me. I have permanent damage now, because of him.
- I would do as the authorities are- charge him criminally. Since I didn't have my helmet on, he had no right to hit me. Not just in football terms, but in terms of the law.

ASSAILANT
- His helmet came off before I could stop myself from moving towards him. I couldn't help it.
- I SUPPOSE, if this happened to me, I would want some serious punishment done to the guy who hit me.
- I would make sure that the person who hit the other guy wasn't doing it on purpose. Who knows if he did?- they should look further into that.

PARENT OF VICTIM
- Why would any high school football player want to hurt an opponent so badly that they hit them with their helmet OFF, and give them permanent damage!? What was his motive??
- That boy needs some serious discipline.
- Not only does he need to be charged criminally, his parents need to keep him OUT of football to teach him a lesson, and put him in some serious community service work, just to show him how to care for others and lose the unnecessary hatred he has for people.

PARENT OF ASSAILANT
- I'm so disappointed in my son. He was never a bad kid; I honestly don't know why he did this.
- I don't think he should be charged or go to jail. He just needs to be taught a lesson.
- I promise I'll discipline him. But he can't go to jail.

STATE AUTHORITY
- Personally, I've never seen this before, making me feel that when helmets fall off, opponents don't just accidentally headbutt them. This kid had some motive, or was out of control.
- This young man has it coming for him- he is being charged criminally and he totally deserves it.
- If this was my kid, or my player, I would kick him off my team immediately and tell his parents to give him some serious lesson-teaching.

TEAMMATE-VICTIM
- This makes me mad beyond belief. I'd like to take that guy on the field and headbutt HIM.
- Take him to jail. He intentionally hit one of our players that was unprotected, and deserves to be punished.
- Personally, I'd just headbutt him back. Fair and square, right?

TEAMMATE-ASSAILANT
- I can't believe he'd do something like that...
- I think he just needs to seriously re-think his values and stop taking out his anger on the wrong people.
- He needs to just figure things out on his own.

COACH-ASSAILANT
- My player was playing the game of football, like he should've been, and simply didn't realize his helmet had fallen off. Why does no one see that?
- He shouldn't be charged criminally; he is innocent.
- I'm going to allow him to stay on my team, although I'm not so sure he'll be playing a lot. I have a feeling other teams will discriminate against us and take minor hits more seriously.

PRINCIPAL-ASSAILANT'S SCHOOL
- I'm not sure how to feel about this. I know he probably didn't mean to hurt the player so seriously, but he needs to accept the consequences for his actions; he is a young adult and knew fully well what he was doing.
- I think he needs to go through community service and pay great respects to the victim and his family. As for being charged, that's up for the law to decide.
- He needs to be permanently suspended from his football team. This is beyond temporary suspension.
